Installing the Jetpack Security Plugin

We will start with the most basic part that is how you can install the plugin. If you are installing WordPress, they will suggest you install Jetpack. The same goes with WooCommerce. When you are setting up WooCommerce, it will ask you to install Jetpack too at the end of the page. So, if they ask you to install it, you can directly install it from there.

However, if you don’t want to install it from there. There are other ways to install it. For that, you will have to head over to Plugins > Add a new Plugin. You will find all the plugins there. In the featured section, you will find the Jetpack plugin.

Jetpack Security

Just install the plugin Jetpack Security and you are done with the procedure. It will then ask you to activate the plugin. You can simply activate the plugin by hitting the activate button on the plugins screen. This is where you have completed the setup.

You have now successfully installed the Jetpack Security plugin.

If you already have downloaded the zip file of the Jetpack plugin, you don’t have to search the plugin in the plugin directory. Instead, you can directly install it from the zip. In that case, you will have to head over to Plugins and then you can click on the upload plugin.

It will then ask you to select the file. You can select the zip file that you just downloaded. You can simply upload the zip file and then follow the same steps to activate the plugin. In these easy steps, you have successfully installed and activated the plugin. The next step is where you can do the configuration.

Don’t worry, the configuration part is also easy. If you follow the guide, it will take you very little time to configure the plugin. Therefore, you can surely follow the guide and follow each step carefully to configure the plugin.

Activating the Modules

Before you can do any of the things, you will have to create an account here. Jetpack will ask you for access to the WordPress account. It’s not your website’s account but it’s a wordpress.com account.

Most people who are using self-hosted WordPress won’t have access to the same. Therefore, they don’t have the account of WordPress. In that case, you can surely create an account. Creating an account is easy and it will hardly take few minutes to create an account. Once your account is ready, you can then follow to the next part.

While you are registering for an account, it will also ask you to enter the website name. This is where you can enter your website’s name and URL. Further, they will ask you to choose the plan. You can surely start with the free plan. Usually, the option for the free plan will be down somewhere. SO, you can find the button and click on it to activate the plugin.

The next part is where you can start activating the modules.

Jetpack Security

Just like many of the plugins, Jetpack will work on the modules. Therefore, you can activate the modules and get the feature of that module.

For example, there is a backup module. If you activate the backup module, you can take the backups. In the same way, there are various other modules. Each of the modules will represent a specific type of functionality.

You can activate the plugins as per your requirement. Please note that if you activate all the plugins, it will slow down your website and you will start feeling a slow speed. Therefore, you should only activate the modules that you want and the ones that you need.

Let’s learn more about features and usage.

Security – Jetpack Plugin

When you go to Jetpack > Settings. You will see various tabs. You can simply head over to security and you will get the following options.

Jetpack Security

This is the place where you can configure the security of the website.

The first option here is my favorite. Here, you can get the complete downtime monitoring of the website. You can know when was your website down and for how much time. Jetpack will go one step ahead here if you want. It will monitor your website for uptime and when the website is not accessible. It will simply send you an email saying that your website is not accessible.

When you get an email about the same, you can know what are the things that are going wrong on the website. Further, when the website is live again, they will again send you an email saying that your website is back up. This feature is also included in the free plan. Therefore, you don’t have to go with the premium plan for this.

The next thing here is the brute force attack protection. You can easily protect your website from brute force attacks along with many others. It’s better to leave most of the options as the default ones if you don’t know more about it. The default options will help you protect your website from most of the attacks.

You can surely do the advanced configuration if you want. It will also allow you to auto-update the plugin. You can always keep it on as this is very much useful.

If you want to log in to your WordPress dashboard using wordpress.com details, you can keep that option on. This is surely your choice on how you want to log in.

Performance

After the security of the website, performance is the next thing that you will get here. There are many default options here that are enough for most people. You don’t need to make the changes here.

We will still see what are the options and what do they do.

There is an option called a site accelerator. This will optimize the images on your website and will optimize the pages to load them faster. It will embed all the static files which will speed up the loading time.

Talking about images, it will compress the images and it will also convert them into .webp images. This will speed up your website loading time. There is another option given that you can activate if you want. It’s about using the lazy loading feature. It’s quite a popular feature from Jetpack Security and people have been using it for many websites.

By default, WordPress will load all the images and then display the page to the user. Lazy loading won’t load all the images. Instead, when the user starts scrolling, it will start loading the rest of the images.

This is one of the best ways to increase the performance of your website. There are many other things you can do here.

One of them is search optimization methods. There are options for search optimization. However, if you are using the free version, you won’t get any access to this feature. Therefore, you won’t see this.

For premium users, you can surely do this and increase the speed of your website.

Other Tabs

The next tab is for the writing experience. This is where you can create carousels and optimizing the writing experience of your post-creating page. The feature is great for all the bloggers out there as you can write more effectively ver here. Further, there are some of the other options you can set here. This will include hiding the distractions when you are writing.

Further, you can always turn on the backups if you want. Turning on the backups is always a great idea if you want to stay safe. The plugin will automatically take the backups of your website and you can restore it whenever you want.

Dashboard

The dashboard is the place where you will see a quick summary of all the things. You can see whether the security of the website is tight enough or not. You can also run a scan directly from the dashboard if you want. This is the best way to run the scan as you don’t have to go to various websites and do the things.

Using WordPress.com

Like we have already mentioned, the main goal of Jetpack is to centralize all the websites. You will get a centralized version of all your websites. This is where you can log in to your website using wordpress.com.

When you are using a WordPress website, you will see the “Login with WordPress.com” option. When you click on the WordPress option, it will ask for the login details. You can also enter your WordPress id password to log in.

In the same way, you can use wordpress.com to do all the things. In this way, you can access all the websites which are connected to Jetpack. You can manage all the websites from wordpress.com. This is how you can use the centralized display and do all the things directly from the website.

Wordress.com is a great way to use certain features on your website. If you just want to check the comments of all the blogs, you can do it directly from WordPress.com instead of opening your admin panel. As it’s a centralized platform, you will see all the blogs directly on a single dashboard.

Further, they also have an android app from which you can run the website.

Final Words about Jetpack Security

To conclude, this is how you can set up Jetpack security on your website. It has all the basic features. This clearly shows that you won’t get perfect security here. This is the main reason why people are not using Jetpack. Further, some people saw a slowdown in their website’s loading speed after installing Jetpack. Therefore, you can surely try out the free plan of Jetpack. If you think it’s not working for you, you can surely deactivate the plugin and get back to another plugin. You can surely try it out.
