WordPress is one of the most popular CMS out there. It’s always nice to know the statistics of your favorite CMS. It gives a proper idea about what’s happening in the market. We are going to see detail stats on what is the total share of WordPress in the market. We are going to see the history of WordPress share in the CMS market, thereafter, we will also compare it with all the other CMS in 2021.

History of WordPress share

We are going to take the data from 2011 to see how WordPress has grown to what is right now. In 2011, WordPress was dominating 13.1% of the CMS market. It will give you a rough idea of how WordPress has performed in the decade.

Before we see how much percentage WordPress dominates in the CMS market. Let’s see the number of websites using CMS (Content Management System). Roughly 64 Million websites are running CMS. This includes all the CMS such as Joomla, Drupal, Wix, etc.

Among these 64 Million websites, roughly 28 million websites are running on WordPress. That’s approximately 43.58% of the total market. This shows the popularity of WordPress. Back in 2011, it was only 13.1% and now it’s almost 50%.

While WordPress’s share is increasing at tremendous speed, there are a lot of other CMS whose share is decreasing.

In 2021, WordPress has a 43.58% market share over all the other CMS. This makes WordPress the most popular CMS out there. Wix and Progress Sitefinity stand in the second and third places of the list respectively. Both of these CMS has seen massive growth in the last year itself. Let’s compare WordPress with other CMS.

  • Squarespace at 4.17%
  • Plesk at 2.93%
  • Even Godaddy website builder has 2.51% of market share
  • Joomla stands at 2.41% market share
  • The next is Weebly with 1.58%

Joomla and Drupal were the CMS whose share decreased a lot in the past couple of years. Once these CMS used to be right below WordPress. Now, as Wix and Squarespace are making easy to use interface and providing enough features, the other Content Management Systems are going at the bottom.

This was the data of all the websites on the internet. Now, let’s consider the top 1 million websites and see if WordPress is still the most popular CMS.

As mentioned, we have not considered the entire internet. Instead, we have chosen the top websites to get the exact idea. The data here is taken from the first million websites in the world.

WordPress still dominates the CMS market with over 35.18% shares. There are roughly 925k websites running on WordPress CMS. Hence, it is still in the topmost position.

In the same way, the other websites here are mostly based on Drupal, WP Engine, Joomla, etc. Unlike the above list, here Wix and Squarespace shares are very low. Even Blogger is above Squarespace and Wix lies after Squarespace. Let’s see some more details about all the CMS and the top positions.

  • WordPress is in the first position with 35.18% share
  • The next in the list is Drupal. The percentage count is only 3.55% and still, it manages to be in the second position. Looks like people either use WordPress as their CMS or use custom coded websites.
  • Plesk has 2.86% of market share
  • Google Search Appliances stands in 4th positions dominating over 2.76% respectively.
  • WP Engine has 2.65% of market share which is more likely to exceed Plesk as they are constantly upgrading their service to provide a better experience.
  • The next is Joomla with 1.98%
  • The next is CPanel with 1.88% of domination

Let’s have a glance at how WP is performing when you take a different amount of websites. We have already compared WordPress wit the top 1 Million websites and also, with the entire internet.

Now, if you decrease the number and only consider the first 100k websites, WordPress has over 36.15% of CMS market share. Not to mention, WordPress is the top position here. WordPress is followed by Drupal and Atlassian Cloud on the list. Wix is not there in the top 10 CMS when you only consider the first 100k websites.

In the same way, if you decrease the number to 10k, we will have WordPress as the CMS winner. Even in the top 10 thousand websites on the internet (considering traffic), 3735 websites run on WordPress. Drupal is in the second rank when you only count CMS.
